In TCVM, brain disorders are considered stasis or phlegm misting the mind leading to confusion, loss of vision and behavior change. We see this in older pets with cognitive disorders which is similar to dementia in people. In horses, Cushing's disease and EPM can be accompanied by behavior changes due to brain dysfunction. With animals, as with people, sometimes our diagnosis is just old age.
Our goals for treatment are to
- Tonify the Yin organs - the Kidney is associated with the brain and nervous system and also the Jing (essence) which is our life force. We are all born with a finite amount of Jing which is like the wax in a candle. Our lifestyle can support or deplete our Jing. Burning the candle from both ends ie wild lifestyle, travel, competition, little rest can cause early aging, while a healthy lifestyle, rest, healthy food, a comfortable environment with little stress can help us live a long healthy life.
- Clear Phlegm from the Heart and Mind - Chronic Qi and Blood stasis can turn to Phlegm which can block the free flow of Qi needed for a healthy mind and spirit.
- Calm the Shen - Confusion and feeling lost is a common complaint of people in the early stages of dementia. Our pets and horses can't tell us this but we know that our animals like a familiar surrounding and consistent schedule.
Concentrated Stasis in the Mansion of the Mind contains herbs that treat these principles. In many cases we recommend using this formula in association with herbal formulas to treat additional geriatric issues like arthritis, Cushing's disease or EPM.
Some humans use this formula as a hang over cure. Luckily our pets don't have these problems !
